The Sheridan Group Introduces Custom Publishing Direct™ at the 30th Annual SSP Meeting

Hunt Valley, MD – (June, 2008) – The Sheridan Group launched a new service at the 30th annual meeting of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), in Boston, MA, on May 28th, 2008.

Sheridan Custom Publishing Direct™ is an evolutionary content delivery service whereby publishers offer their readership the ability to create custom journal publications by selecting articles from an online repository of publisher content. These selected articles can then be arranged to suit the reader’s need. A sophisticated e-commerce system allows the reader to order print copies or a secure electronic version of their article or custom journal.

Sheridan Custom Publishing Direct™ allows publishers to leverage the value of their content by extending the life of previously published articles. Custom article collections provide additional revenue for publishers by re-packaging and reusing stored and tagged articles. Publishers may also choose to create their own custom compilations to offer their readers, thereby actively marketing popular topical content.

Sheridan believes that its Custom Publishing Direct™ solution is poised to help publishers respond to the growing movement toward article-based content distribution.

The Sheridan Group, located in Hunt Valley, MD, is comprised of twelve printing companies; six based in the United States, five in Europe, and one in Asia. Each company has a market specialty – scholarly journals, magazines, catalogs, or books. The Sheridan Group is a leading provider of a full range of printing and publishing services to publishers, associations and university presses.

The Sheridan Press Receives Forest Stewardship Council Certification from the Rainforest Alliance

The Sheridan Press, a provider of printing and publishing services to the scientific, technical, medical and scholarly journal markets, has earned Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody certification from the Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program. This certification allows The Sheridan Press to be responsive to a growing trend in the paper and printing industry of companies making more environmentally and socially responsible supply chain decisions.

Chain-of-Custody certification guarantees that wood that comes from certified, responsibly managed forestlands is tracked throughout the supply chain, from the forest to the consumer. Conscientious consumers can look for the FSC logo on wood products to know they are supporting forest management that protects biodiversity and supports local communities.

"All of the papers we currently offer our customers, whether recycled or not, are provided by the mills and distributors who follow responsible forestry practices, such as those established by the Forest Stewardship Council," said Ed Hartman, Vice President of Operations at The Sheridan Press. "This Chain of Custody certification will allow us to provide the option to our customers to produce a journal using 100% guaranteed FSC certified paper – from forest to printed product."

In addition to certifying hundreds of printers and paper mills within the supply chain, The Rainforest Alliance is the world’s leading certifier of forestlands to the FSC standards. To date, the organization has certified 100 million acres of forestland. The Rainforest Alliance, an international nonprofit conservation organization, works with businesses in making more responsible choices by using market forces to protect our natural resources and support workers and local communities.

The Sheridan Press, located in Hanover, PA, is operational 24 hours a day, 6 days a week, and has over 500 employees. It is one of 11 printing companies (global and domestic) within The Sheridan Group (Hunt Valley, MD).

Sheridan Reprints Partners With Copyright Clearance Center, Expanding the Scope of CCC’s Rightslink® Content Ordering and Delivery Solutions.

HANOVER, PENNSYLVANIA (April, 2006) – Sheridan Reprints, a business unit of The Sheridan Press, and Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) have jointly announced the formation of a mutually beneficial business partnership, whereby CCC’s robust RIghtslink® web-based content licensing and ordering application is the conduit for a sophisticated online order center for author and commercial reprints (standard and custom), digital or POD reprints, and ePrints, as fulfilled and delivered through Sheridan Reprints.

This powerful alliance merges CCC’s fast-growing global representation of over 1.75 million works (which, at this release, spans over 9,600 publishers and associated authors), with the immediate ability to provide a high quality, tangible and trackable byproduct of those obtained rights, seamlessly delivered through Sheridan Reprints.

This collaboration, to be jointly promoted by Sheridan Reprints and CCC sales staffs, will result in a full-service rights management and fulfillment offering unlike any other. The CCC was established in the late 1970’s by authors, publishers and users as the not-for-profit Reproduction Rights Organization for the United States. As such, their respected reputation as intermediary between copyright holders and content users ensures a fair and trusted exchange of reuse rights and royalties. Their presence encompasses STM commercial, association/society and university press publishers as well as newspapers and magazines.

Sheridan Reprints, originated in 1984, has served the Scientific, Technical & Medical publishing community’s reprint needs for over two decades, offering exceptional quality, a range of custom reprint programs, and unmatched personal customer service.

Importantly, both companies feel strongly that the partnering of their services will maintain the integrity of the products (both permissions and reprints) throughout the process.

The CCC/Sheridan Reprints offering:
As publishers instantly license content and order article content while they are online, the benefits are clear: increased revenue from permissions as well as content redistribution, improved operational efficiencies, the ability to gain measurable data on customers’ content usage and preferences, and increased customer satisfaction. Similarly, content users will enjoy the benefit of obtaining permissions and ordering article reprints directly at the point of content, the freedom to place orders at any time, and the ability to track their orders in real time.

Once the content user locates content he/she wishes to license, they are provided a simple link to instantly order that content in several different document types depending on their needs. Rightslink software not only features easy-to-use steps to order, it offers detailed drop-down usage options as specified by each publisher’s business rules. The user will obtain an instant price quote, even before registering. Rightslink also features the flexibility to review, preview and modify an order prior to sending it. Once sent, the order is then instantly integrated with Sheridan Reprints for fulfillment. There is one point of contact for the publisher - all transactions are administered through CCC, including customer service, billing and collections. Rightslink also features built-in multi-featured reporting, generating detailed real-time production and financial data for the publisher.

Author reprints can also be facilitated through a link embedded in an email notification to the author, sent by the publisher. Publisher branding and metadata are maintained throughout the transaction.

Installation of this new press is expected to begin sometime early January 2001 and be fully operational by April 2001.

"With a strong sense of optimism that future short and long term prospects will remain bright for us along with our inherent commitment to invest in new technology, I'm pleased to announce our initiative to purchase and install a new Man Roland 6-Unit Color Press," said Joan B. Weisman, President and Chief Operating Officer. "Regarding productivity, for example, this press will make ready all forms more than twice as fast versus our current operation," stated Craig Rineman, Vice President of Operations. Additionally, this 6-color press is expected to accommodate our future needs for added capacity with the anticipated color production growth in both the journal and reprint segments of our business."

The Sheridan Press Honors Press Operators For Outstanding Industry Achievement

HANOVER, PENNSYLVANIA (June 20, 2000) - The Sheridan Press formally honored Steve Beard and Kevin Klunk, two of the company's Four Color Press Operators, for successfully completing the National Council sheet-Fed Multi-Color Certification Examination. With this certification Mr. Beard and Mr. Klunk earn the high distinction of becoming National Council Certified Operators (NCCO).

"This is an extraordinary honor and accomplishment for Steve and Kevin as well as The Sheridan Press. These gentlemen represent two of only 95 sheet-fed operators world-wide to successfully pass these examinations and receive certification since the program inception in 1997 by The National Council for Skills Standards in Graphic Communication. We're very proud of them and feel privileged to have them in our employ as part of our Operation Team here at The Sheridan Press," stated Craig Rineman, Sheridan's Vice President of Operations.

The National Council Sheet-Fed Multi-Color Examination is administered by The National Council For Skill Standards in Graphic Arts (NC). The two sections of the test are for core skills and press operations. Candidates must pass both parts to become certified. The core skill section includes applied math and measurement skills, statistical process controls, communications, problem solving, and workflow knowledge. The press operations section examines the operator's knowledge of safe working procedures, paper (web or sheet) transfer systems, ink and inking systems, chemistry of dampening systems, materials, and maintenance. Throughout the examination emphasis is placed upon assessing an operator's knowledge of press process color reproduction and the control of print quality.

Successful candidates are awarded certification for a five-year period, after which the operator must take a re-certification exam. To be eligible for the examination, lead operators must have a minimum of five years of full-time experience as a multi-color operator and 2 ½ years in the lead operator position. The Council reviews the operator's safety record as lead operator and requires employer sponsorship. The National Council contracts with educators in vocational-technical schools, community colleges, and universities to proctor the examination in locations convenient to candidates.

Headquartered in Kennebunk, Maine, the National Council is a nonprofit organization governed by a board of directors. It was established to maintain and improve the competitiveness of the graphic communications industry through the development and maintenance of skill standards; the promotion and dissemination of skill standards; and the voluntary testing and certification of professionals in the industry.
